There is a story told about Reb Yisroel Salanter, one of the great Torah leaders in Europe and the leader of the Mussar Movement. This story teaches the lesson that unwavering trust in Hashem, Bitachon, holds the power to manifest one’s deepest desires—on the condition that this trust remains steadfast, devoid of any lingering doubt.
In a particular encounter, a man sought counsel from Reb Yisroel regarding purchasing a lottery ticket. Reb Yisroel advised him to procure the ticket and harbor absolute Bitachon that he would secure the entire jackpot. With this assurance, Reb Yisroel asserted that victory was inevitable. However, as days and weeks transpired without the man claiming the coveted prize, he confronted Reb Yisroel seeking an explanation for the unfulfilled guarantee.
In response, Reb Yisroel proposed a compromise, offering the man half of the lottery winnings. Eagerly accepting the deal, the man unknowingly unraveled the mystery. Reb Yisroel told him that the willingness to settle for less than the full amount exposed a deficiency in trust. This partial trust, Reb Yisroel contended, was the root cause of his failure to win the lottery.
Expanding on this principle, Reb Yisroel Salanter emphasized that a comprehensive understanding of the laws governing any aspect of observance—be it in Halacha or Mussar—serves to fortify one’s adherence to them. Accordingly, delving into the Halachic principles and teachings of Chazal pertaining to Bitachon enables an individual to cultivate and reinforce confidence and trust in Hashem. Through diligent study, one elevates their level of trust, ensuring a more profound connection with the Divine and unlocking the potential for the realization of their aspirations.
